Thorbjorn Jagland re-elected Secretary General

Strasbourg, 26/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - Former Norwegian Socialist Prime Minister Thorbjorn Jagland has been re-elected to the post of Secretary General of the Council of Europe, garnering 156 votes against the 93 which went to German Liberal, Sabine Leutheusser-Schnarrenberger. A third candidate, Jean-Claude Mignon (UMP) of France, the outgoing president of PACE, was set aside by the Committee of Ministers because he had not held a ministerial position in his country. Th re-election of Jagland, who now starts a second term of five years, was not universally well accepted in the chamber. France's François Rochebloine (UDI) expressed - at some length - his irritation at the “internal functioning of an institution” which “does not play by the rules it prescribes”. (VL)
