EU calls for end to latest bloody violence

Brussels, 26/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 25 June, the European Union called for an immediate end to the bloody cycle of violence and reprisals in the Central African Republic.

The European External Action Service (EEAS) declared that “we strongly condemn the violence that has affected the city of Bambari and the surrounding area over the past few days and which has led to the deaths of around 50 people, most of them civilians. We urge all groups to immediately cease hostilities and refrain from retaliation”. The press release added that “the EU remains extremely concerned by the continuing insecurity in the Central African Republic and the diminishing humanitarian area that results from this. This permanent insecurity and the repeated threats towards the communities targeted undermine the conditions required for sustainable reconciliation”. The EU has provided assurances that it will “remain strongly committed, together with its international partners, to supporting the stabilisation of the country”. (AN)
