Twenty “Do the Right Mix” projects rewarded

Brussels, 17/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - Just under 20 initiatives promoting sustainable transport, in this age of mobile aps, will receive funding of up to €7,000 as part of the “Do the Right Mix” campaign.

The call for proposals in this third year of the “Do the Right Mix” campaign has begun to circulate in a majority of member states. This final call for funding received 66 requests from 23 eligible countries, increasing the scope of the campaign from last year's 18 countries. Selected projects encourage urban journeys to be made using a combination of sustainable transport resources and avoid car use. 19 will be rewarded, all of them integrating the use of mobile aps and social networks.

European Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas was delighted that Europe has proved “incredibly innovative” in this field and added that “all the various activities have shown that sustainable transport can be accessible to everyone. We hope that with this funding they can continue their excellent work at grassroots level”.

Selected initiatives include the city of Ghent, Belgium, which will have 10 car-free roads transformed into “living streets” (Living Street 2.0). The city of Tallinn in Estonia will encourage car drivers stuck in traffic jams to “Get Out Of The Can” and get on their bikes. In Limerick, Ireland, transport modules will combine bicycle parking and potted flowers in parking lots, where people will be able to have their picnics. (MD)
