17/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - Russia confident about South Stream. While Serbia is being urged by the European Commission to suspend construction work on the gas pipeline project on its territory led by Gazprom - as indeed are the other EU member states that are stakeholders in the project (see EUROPE 11097) - Russia's Minister for Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov, visiting Belgrade on 16-17 June, said he is confident that the suspension called for by Brussels is only “temporary”. “I don't doubt it for a second because this project is the only means of supplying south-east Europe in gas”, he told press, after a meeting with his Serbian counterpart, Ivica Dacic. In Lavrov's opinion, Moscow and Belgrade “have confirmed their agreements concerning the South Stream project and the need to bring it about”. (EH)
