EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) palestine

17/06/2014 (Agence Europe) - EU concerned about situation of administrative detainees. The European Union is following with “great concern” reports about the deteriorating health condition of Palestinian administrative detainees who have been on a hunger strike for several weeks. “The EU calls for the full respect of international human rights obligations towards all Palestinian detainees and prisoners”, said the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on 13 June. In total, 125 Palestinian detainees and prisoners are on hunger strike, and 90 of them have been so since 24 April. They are protesting against being held in administrative detention (see EUROPE 11092). Ashton's spokesperson pointed out that the EU has repeatedly expressed its concern about the extensive use by Israel of administrative detention. (CG)
