Brussels, 23/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Friday 23 May, the European Union reiterated its support for the holding of “free, transparent and fair” presidential elections in Ukraine on 25 May. According to the European External Action Service (EEAS), these elections should allow the Ukrainian people “to choose their own future by peaceful and democratic means”. “Successful elections will be a major step to de-escalate tensions and restore security and political stability”, added High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton. The EU reiterates that Ukrainian voters must be “unimpeded” in the exercise of their voting rights. Fresh attempts at destablising the situation took place on Thursday 22 May, resulting in the death of at least 16 people, and Crimea still remains annexed. “Election authorities must be allowed to conduct elections without hindrance throughout the country and domestic and international observers must be allowed to fully fulfil their function”, the EEAS states. It reiterates that the OSCE/ODIHR (Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights) has deployed an observation mission to assess compliance with international standards and that, on the basis of that assessment, results “must be respected by all”. “The EU will pay particular attention to the attitude and behaviour of all parties and international partners in this respect”, warns the EEAS. Russia's President Vladimir Putin has announced that his country will respect the choice of the Ukrainians. (CG)
