Brussels, 23/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - The Committee of the Regions may have a make-over after the European elections on 25 May.
CoR President Ramon Luis Valcarcel Siso (EPP, Spain) and Vice-President Mercedes Bresso (S&D, Italy) are both standing in the European elections.
If they both become MEPs, then their successors will need to be approved by the Committee of the Regions members at the 25 June plenary. It is expected that the successors will be from the same political parties. The EPP has already decided to field Michel Lebrun of Belgium for CoR president, and the PES has chosen Catiusca Marini (Italy) for vice-president. The two successors' terms of office would run until February 2015. The chair of the COTER committee, Marek Wozniak (EPP, Poland) is also standing in the European elections and, if elected, his successor will be selected from among COTER members. Local elections are being held in several countries at the same time as the European elections (Belgium, Italy and Greece), which is likely to result in a further re-shuffling of posts. (MD)
