Potential five-year phase-in for new lorries

Brussels, 23/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - The Transport Council is preparing to introduce a compulsory new design for lorries to make them greener and safer. The new rules will come into force in eight years' time, but the Commission wants earlier introduction of the new weights and sizes of lorries following publication of the changes to EU Directive 96/53/EC. On 23 May, Coreper is reported to have voted by a wide majority in favour of a five year phase-in after the new legislation comes into force, which is expected to be in three years' time. The safer and more aerodynamic lorries would thus be seen on the roads in eight years' time. The European Parliament said in its position on first reading that it wants the new design to apply after a seven-year phase in.

The Council of Ministers is reported to have made the changes on request from France and Sweden, home to big automobile companies - Citroën and Volvo - that have begun marketing new lorries. The Transport Council of 5 June is planning to hold a policy debate on the issue. (MD)
