15/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - EU condemns another execution. On Wednesday 14 May, speaking through the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, the EU strongly condemned the recent execution of 45-year old Hryhoriy Yuzepchuk, who was sentenced to death in April 2013. This execution is the second in Belarus since the beginning of the year. The EU again urged Belarus, the only country in Europe still applying capital punishment, “to join a global moratorium on the death penalty as a first step towards its universal abolition”. Conscious of the serious nature of the crimes for which Yuzepchuk was convicted - a double murder, then the murder of his fellow inmate - Ashton's spokesperson reiterated that the EU opposes capital punishment, which cannot be justified under any circumstances.
