Brussels, 15/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - The death of Jean-Luc Dehaene on Thursday 15 May, who was prime minister of Belgium from 1992 to 1999, has been greeted with dismay by European politicians. The president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, said: “Jean-Luc Dehaene was an outstanding Belgian and European politician. Among many other achievements he led his country into the euro. Jean-Luc Dehaene was a committed European playing an outstanding role as Vice-President on the Convention that drew up the Constitutional Treaty.” The president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, regretted the loss for all the European family of a man of inspiration, drive and commitment. Both men expressed condolences on behalf of the EP and Commission to Dehaene's family, friends and the country of Belgium. (MD)
