Brussels, 15/05/2014 (Agence Europe) - The unions have not taken kindly to the new internal travel policy of the European Commission, which obliges staff travelling abroad to choose the cheapest flights. The European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF) and the Union syndicale have spoken out against the fact that the Commission may now use low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and easyJet, rather than only flying with members of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). “It is unacceptable that the Commission grants an 'official supplier' status to an airline that does not treat its passengers and staff properly. This is giving a negative sign to the whole society”, was the reaction of the vice-president of Union syndicale, Georges Tsolos. The fact that the institution wants to save the taxpayers' money should not lead it to approve the economic model of the low-cost airlines, the unions argue. They intend to bring pressure to bear on the institution to change its policy. They announce the forthcoming publication of a list of FAIRlines, airlines which respect the principles of employment law. (MD)
