17/04/2014 (Agence Europe) - Hungary urged to comply with EU competition rules. The European Commission formally requested on Wednesday 16 April that Hungary comply with its duties under EU legislation following the introduction of a law in the country that would prevent the Hungarian competition authorities from issuing sanctions against price-fixing for farm products. The EU treaties require effective, dissuasive fines to be levied on companies involved in price-fixing, along with the duty to cooperate and ensure the effectiveness of EU law. The Commission's request is in the form of a reasoned opinion, the second stage in the EU infringement proceedings. Hungary now has two months in which to bring its rules into line with EU legislation, failing which the Commission may take the country to the European Court of Justice. (EL)
