President of Transnistria asks for EU recognition

Brussels, 17/04/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Wednesday 16 April, the president of the separatist region of Transnistria, Evgueni Chevtchouk, called on the European Union to recognise Transnistria if it wants stability in the region. He said that recognising Transnistria would not be of any risk for the EU now or in the future and is the only way an area of stability can be created in the region. On the same day, the president of Transnistria called on Russia and the United Nations to recognise the region's independence.

On 18 March, the speaker of the Transnistrian parliament, Mikhail Burla, called on the speaker of the Russian Duma to arrange for the region to be annexed to Russia. Quizzed by French news agency AFP about this, Chevtchouk said he was only calling for recognition of Transnistria and refused to discuss “hypothetical suppositions”, which he said, were related to further stages to be decided by the citizens of his republic.

The EU supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova and regularly calls for progress in talks between the Moldovan government and the Transnistrian authorities. (CG)
