Meeting to break deadlock in Croatian dispute

Brussels, 15/04/2014 (Agence Europe) - On Tuesday 15 April, Switzerland and the European Union were expected to finalise a compromise on the free movement of Croatian workers, at a further EFTA meeting. If confirmed, a compromise would bring discussions out of deadlock on the mandate for an EU-Switzerland institutional agreement to resume relations between the two blocs. Zagreb has already given its blessing to the compromise submitted by Berne, of an immediate application of the protocol aiming to extend the freedom of movement of European workers to Croatian citizens. Switzerland is also expected formally and publicly to commit not to discriminate against the 28 member states of the EU, a commitment which is the subject of a declaration. According to the Swiss media, the EU is expected to adopt the negotiation mandate for the institutional agreement on Wednesday 16 April. Subsequently, the ERASMUS + and Horizon 2020 programmes, which were frozen by the Commission following the referendum of 9 February, will also be taken off ice. EUROPE will return to this. (SP)
