Siim Kallas gives up attempts to become prime minister of Estonia

Brussels, 12/03/2014 (Agence Europe) - No change for Estonian Commissioner Siim Kallas, who will remain Vice-President of the European Commission and European Transport Commissioner. Attacks in the Estonian media and possibly political pressure in Brussels have made him give up his attempts to become the new prime minister of Estonia following the resignation of Andrus Ansip on 4 March. “Under the present circumstances, [I] was not in a position to accept my party's proposal to form a government”, he tweeted on Wednesday 12 March, adding that he was returning to Brussels to prepare for the Transport Council on Friday 14 March. The media attacks are reported to have put paid to his plans, along possibly with pressure from the president of the European Commission. José-Manuel Barroso received a letter from MEPs, arranged by Estonian Green MEP Indrek Tarand, about possible conflicts of interest under Article 17 of the EU Treaty between the commissioner's job and his bid to become prime minister (see EUROPE 11036).
