Brussels, 12/03/2014 (Agence Europe) - At its plenary session on 12 March, the European Parliament adopted the report by Sabine Verheyen (EPP, Germany) on preparing for a fully convergent audiovisual world, by 616 votes in favour, 34 against and 30 abstentions. This report is the Parliament's response to the European Commission's Green Paper on the consequences of the transformation of the audiovisual landscape currently underway (see EUROPE 10834). The report stresses that the changes to the audiovisual landscape call for the creation of a modern, horizontal regulatory framework, based on access and the user, adapted to the current realities of the convergent markets. However, it laments the fact that in its document, the Commission essentially takes account of the aspects of economic growth and technical aspects, leaving aside the significance of the media for cultural diversity and Europe's identity. MEPs also stress that the diversity of cultural and audiovisual creativity must remain accessible and easy to access for all citizens in a convergent world, and that it is therefore vital to preserve the principle of network neutrality into the future.
