Brussels, 28/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - European Commissioner for the Internal Market and Services Michel Barnier put an end to the suspense on Friday 28 February, and officially confirmed that he would like to succeed current European Commission President José Manuel Barroso in his party. The EPP stated in a press release that it had received Barnier's application, which will be examined at the EPP Congress in Dublin next week. Barnier is supported by the Fidesz party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, and by the Slovenian NSi party. His support nevertheless already seems less solid than that of his Luxembourgish competitor Jean-Claude Juncker, behind whom Germany's Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and Greece's New Democracy party are rallying. EUROPE will return to this. (SP)
