Brussels, 28/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - The Greek presidency of the Council of EU has set up a “friends of the presidency group” that will examine the British opt-out and opt-in modalities in the Justice and Home Affairs field. This group brings together all the member states and according to one source speaking on Friday 28 February, is a normal approach when tackling challenges. It is expected to begin work in March. The Lisbon Treaty allows the United Kingdom to make a choice by the end of June 2014 on whether to use its opt-out for re-incorporating into the national remit some 130 policies in the justice and home affairs field, which were adopted before the entry into force of the treaty. If this notification is not forthcoming before 1 June, the country will be obliged to apply these policies in full and accept the full powers of the European Court of Justice. In the past, the British government has expressed its wish to abandon the 130 policies and then select what it would like to continue to apply afterwards. The workgroup's task is to assess these opportunities and their repercussions. (SP)
