Strasbourg, 27/02/2014 (Agence Europe) - MEPs want to encourage people to use the SOLVIT system to solve internal market-related problems online and, on Thursday 27 January, they adopted a non-binding report to this effect by Morten Lokkegaard (ALDE, Denmark) by 447 votes to 18, with 19 abstentions. Although SOLVIT has proved itself, the rapporteur commented: “I feel it is time to take SOLVIT to the next level. A SOLVIT 2.0, so to speak. SOLVIT needs to have a stronger focus on businesses and take on more of the complex business-related cases”. The MEPs recommend better cooperation among national SOLVIT centres and for SOLVIT to be used as an early warning system for the single market to help the European Commission remove obstacles. The European Parliament wants the Commission to lay down future development stages for the dispute-resolution system and for the member states to set targets in this connection. If this does not make any noticeable improvement in the way SOLVIT operates, then the EP says that new legislation may be needed in the future, as mentioned by the Commission in a report on SOLVIT published in September 2013, to which the Lokkegaard report responds.
