Brussels, 27/01/2014 (Agence Europe) - According to a confidential questionnaire leaked to the Wall Street Journal on Monday 27 January, the European Commission is assessing the consequences for the division of 4G frequencies among mobile phone operators in Germany of a potential buy-up by Telefonica Deutschland of E-Plus, the German subsidiary of Dutch company KPN. The questionnaire reflects a number of the Commission's fundamental concerns about how the deal would impact on competition. The planned €8.6 billion buy-up was notified to the Commission on 31 October 2013. In December, the Commission opened an investigation into the merger, which would reduce from four to three the number of big mobile phone operators in Germany (the others being Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom) and the merged company would become the biggest operator, dominating the frequencies. The Commission refuses to comment. The results of the investigation are due to be announced on 14 May. (FG/transl.fl)
