Ashton welcomes peace agreement

Brussels, 27/01/2014 (Agence Europe) - On 25 January, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton congratulated the government of the Philippines and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front on the successful conclusions of the peace negotiations that were announced the same day in Kuala Lumpur. “Signing of the annex on normalisation marks the end of a long and difficult process of peace negotiations”, Ashton stated. In her opinion, “it is a truly historic moment, demonstrating the parties' commitment to achieving long-lasting peace on the Philippines' island of Mindanao through a unique and holistic concept of normalisation that encompasses the gradual decommissioning of arms, overall demilitarisation, and its economic and social development”. “Sustainable peace in Mindanao requires an inclusive approach and all stakeholders, including the Moro National Liberation Front, need to demonstrate their goodwill for long lasting results”, Ashton added.

Ashton stated that the EU will continue to fully support the implementation of the process, and hailed the contribution of the facilitator of the peace talks, as well as the members of the international contact group.

The government of the Philippines wants to sign the final agreement in February or March 2014, following the signature of the annex of normalisation on 25 January. The negotiations began in 1996 and have continued intermittently. The conflict began in 1970. (CG/transl.fl)
