Women with disabilities - overcoming social obstacles

Brussels, 11/12/2013 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament has adopted a resolution calling for a process to be introduced that helps support disabled women, particularly during their childhood and adolescence, stages during which the foundations for a large number of positive developments for adult age are laid.

The text drawn up by Angelika Werthmann (ALDE, Austria) was adopted on Wednesday 11 December and aims to reduce the social obstacles that still exist for women with disabilities, so that they can enjoy a better quality in their daily lives (e.g. new technology), equal access to education and jobs, as well as a non-discriminatory in female sexuality and motherhood. The EP is calling on the member states and the other European institutions to take action and include disability in all gender equality programmes and policies.

It is also about supporting voluntary initiatives promoting human diversity and self-help groups, as well as appropriate funding for NGOs active in this area. The resolution calls for the use of EU financial aid, particularly structural funds, to be optimised. (MD/transl.fl)
