LUX prize 2013 awarded to “The Broken Circle Breakdown”

Brussels, 11/12/2013 (Agence Europe) - The Belgian film “The Broken Circle Breakdown” has won the European Parliament's 2013 LUX Prize for cinema.

“The LUX prize is a great initiative - it makes you watch a film that you otherwise wouldn't have”, declared director Felix van Groeningen, when he received the prize from EP president, Martin Schulz. Schulz highlighted the feeling of unity promoted by European films amongst the population and said that “by telling stories about who we are or who we could be, European films help to create a cultural consciousness for Europe. Film makers do not need us, European politicians, but we politicians need you, the film makers. Stories and emotions can help to develop identity”. “The Broken Circle Breakdown”, is a love story about a Belgium couple coping with a tragic loss. Other finalists competing for the prize were British film “Selfish Giant” and “Miele”. (IL/transl.fl)
