Brussels, 22/11/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 21 November, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton welcomed the meeting between President of the Republic of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan and President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliev held in Vienna on 19 November, and she underlined that their agreement to advance negotiations on Nagorno-Karabakh and to meet again in the months ahead is “encouraging”.
According to Ashton's spokesperson, Ashton also commended the efforts of the co-presidents of the OSCE Minsk Group in facilitating the resumption of high-level meetings. “The European Union is ready to engage in renewed efforts towards political settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and to further contribute to peace-building efforts, in support of and in full complementarity with the OSCE Minsk Group”, Ashton's spokesperson said in a press release.
On 19 November, the Armenian and Azerbaijani presidents agreed to make progress in their negotiations to find a peaceful solution to the conflict which pits the two countries against each other over the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh.
