Brussels, 13/09/2013 (Agence Europe) - The European Parliament took position on the instability in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Central African Republic (CAR) and Bahrain in three resolutions adopted in Strasbourg on Thursday12 September.
With regard to the DRC, MEPs call for the immediate halt to all human rights violations - particularly sexual violence. They refuse all support to the forces of destabilisation in the DRC, and call on the Congolese authorities to consolidate democracy and to conduct free and fair elections.
Regarding the anti-constitutional seizure of power in the CAR, MEPs condemn the Seleka coalition's operation led by force in March, as well as the human rights violations. MEPs want the CAR authorities to protect the civilian population and to re-establish security, public order and basic services.
Finally, the European Parliament reminds the authorities in Bahrain of the right of citizens to demonstrate freely. MEPs call for a halt to the repression, and express concern about detention conditions. They want the independent commission for the rights of prisoners and detainees to improve detention conditions.
