Brussels, 31/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - From today, data, documents and even e-mails will all be able to be sent more quickly on “Géant”, the pan-European ultra-fast network for research, which has just reached maximum available capacity of 500 Gbps.
Managers of this network, which helped discover the Higgs boson, announced on Wednesday 31 July that users in any of the 32,000 organisations connected to the network would be able to transfer data at a speed of up to 100 Gbps (gigabits per second), which is almost 5,000 times faster than the average internet user speed in the EU. The European Commission explained that “these speeds will facilitate more immediate collaboration on sensitive projects and meet demand through the rapid increase in data transfer capacity”. The Commission has invested €41.8 million in the network. (JK/transl.fl)
