Deadly attack on UN peacekeepers in Darfur condemned

Brussels, 15/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Sunday 14 July, the EU strongly condemned the previous day's attack on UN peacekeepers in Darfur, which left 7 Tanzanian UNAMID soldiers dead and many others wounded.

The spokesperson for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton issued a statement in which the high representative strongly condemns the attack and extended her “deepest sympathies to the families of the victims, to the Government of Tanzania and to all UNAMID personnel”. She called on “the Government of Sudan to take rapid action to hold the perpetrators accountable and bring them to justice”.

The statement also said that Ashton is “deeply concerned about the deteriorating security situation in Darfur. This latest attack on UNAMID, the third in three weeks, underlines the need to revitalise efforts to achieve a comprehensive and inclusive peace in Darfur and across Sudan”. She also stated that “the EU fully supports the continuing efforts of Joint AU-UN Special Representative for Darfur/Head of UNAMID Dr Ibn Chambas to achieve this”. (AN/transl.fl)
