Brussels, 01/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - EGNOS, the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service, has been given a guarantee for carrying out its work over the next eight years. A €450 million contract was concluded by the European Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and the European Service Satellite Provider (ESSP SAS). The contract, concluded on Wednesday 26 June in the presence of European Commissioner for Industry Antonio Tajani, means continuation of EGNOS services which are used to correct US GPS data and maintain and update the EGNOS infrastructure network.
With its eight-year plan, the EU seeks to demonstrate that the service will be able to provide stability in order to attract investment and applications development stemming from EGNOS. This will also reassure European airports, 80 of which use geostationary navigation technology to help make aviation safer and the increasing number of landings more accurate. (MD/transl.fl)
