EU deplores deadly fighting in Kismayo

Brussels, 01/07/2013 (Agence Europe) - The EU has condemned the deadly fighting that took place between Somali militias on Friday 28 June for the control of the port of Kismayo (in the south of Somalia), claiming at least five lives, the spokesperson for High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton stated on Sunday 30 June.

The high representative deplores the outbreak of fighting in Kismayo (…). She urges all parties to immediately refrain from violence, exercise restraint, and let political processes be used to resolve outstanding differences (…). Alongside the African Union and United Nations, the EU stands ready to support Somalia in re-establishing security, peaceful, balanced and accountable government, and in restoring economic growth. Those should be the focus of all action”, the press release published on 30 June states. (AN/transl.fl)
