Brussels, 20/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 20 June, the European Commission decided to take the Netherlands to the Court of Justice of the European Union for discriminating against students from other EU countries who, unlike students from the Netherlands, are not able to benefit from discount fares on public transport. The Commission recalls that under the terms of the Treaty of the EU, students from the EU - whatever their chosen place of study on EU territory - have the same rights to benefits as local students. The Commission criticises the Netherlands for failing to apply this principal of equal treatment by limiting discounted fares on trains and buses to students who are either Dutch nationals or long-term residents in the Netherlands. All other EU citizens studying in the country, including Erasmus students, are therefore subject to discrimination. (IL/transl.fl)
