Brussels, 20/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - By adopting the report of François Alfonsi (Greens/EFA, France) on 19 June, MEPS from the European Parliament's culture and education committee call for the defence and promotion of endangered micro-languages. According to UNESCO, out of the 255 languages currently spoken in Europe, 128 are threatened with disappearance. Among these 128 threatened languages, 90 are seriously in danger or in a critical situation. The report proposes adapting the access criteria for European funding for the linguistic communities concerned, given their small size. It also calls on the EU to support teaching methodologies for these micro-languages, including distance learning and cross-border exchange platforms, with support for new technologies and new media to favour the transmission of these languages to future generations.
