Brussels, 20/06/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 20 June, the ambassadors from the EU member states failed to find consensus on opening a new negotiation chapter with Turkey on regional policy (Chapter 22). According to one European diplomat, it is “25 versus 2”. Germany and the Netherlands are reportedly against, believing that, after the recent events in Turkey, “it isn't politically acceptable” to open a new chapter. The other members reportedly stressed the need to maintain a constructive dialogue and involvement with Ankara. Further reflection and consultations will take place in the member states this weekend, according to a European source. The ambassadors are due to return to the issue on 24 June. A decision is still possible and the accession conference planned for 26 June - at which the chapter could officially be opened - is still on the agenda, this source stated. (CG/transl.fl)
