Brussels, 15/05/2013 (Agence Europe) - The European Commission will be scrutinising Europe's ports very soon. Commissioner for transport Siim Kallas aims to make them more efficient and will therefore be presenting a legislative proposal and action plan over the course of next week. This will mainly be about making the services market more effective. The Commission will be looking at the transparency of procedures when awarding services contracts in the perspective of developing healthy competition. A source close to the dossier said that, “the EU should be able to compete under a transparent regime”. Infrastructure pricing will also need to be more transparent and flexible and it should also take into account environmental costs. In the long term, it will be necessary for ports to be “self financing”. This raft of measures is not expected to include any social chapter. (MD/transl.fl)
