Two proposals for interoperable information on roads

Brussels, 15/05/2013 (Agence Europe) - In a few months' time, European drivers are expected to receive warnings about dangerous roads, as well as information about secure parking lots for lorries. This will be freely available throughout the Trans-European Network for transport and by way of different communication channels such as smart phones, the radio and road signs. The European Commission presented two draft regulations in this connection on Wednesday 15 May. Siim Kallas, the European Commissioner responsible for transport, explained that, “Timely and accurate information can help us enhance road safety and security as well as transport efficiency”. These two proposals were submitted to the European Parliament and the Council by the delegated acts procedure and are therefore expected to be applied very soon, ideally by next summer. Member states will not be compelled to provide these traffic information services but if they do so they will have to follow European guidelines harmonising the formatting of data that can be used by road operators, car parks and service providers.
