EP vote on data protection postponed

Brussels, 07/05/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 6 May, the German rapporteur on new European data protection rules, Jan Philipp Albrecht (Greens/EFA), called on the European Parliament civil liberties committee to postpone the date for adopting his report, which was initially due to take place on 29 May. The young MEP in charge of the report on the general regulation on the processing of personal data said “we need more time”. The many different amendments submitted to the dossier (more than 1,300), in addition to the sluggishness surrounding the other related dossier (the draft directive on data in legal and police co-operation) make the initial deadline untenable but Albrecht informed his colleagues that “our objective is still to have a vote before the summer break”. The Council is examining the subject ahead of the meeting of ministers responsible at the beginning of June. Their objective is also to obtain a negotiating brief before the summer. The reform presented by Viviane Reding in January 2012 recasts the directive on personal data going back to 1995 and sets out the general framework to be followed in this area by companies and government authorities.
