Mortgage talks almost at end

Brussels, 19/04/2013 (Agence Europe) - The Irish Presidency of the EU Council of Ministers and representatives of the European Parliament hope to reach agreement on Monday 22 April on an EU directive to increase consumer protection (right to information, products to match their description and be fit for purpose, and industry supervision) for any mortgage taken out after 2015. There are a few points still to be settled. The EP wants a fortnight's cooling off period in which consumers can change their minds about a mortgage. The Council of Ministers say this should be optional and for member states to decide. There are also decisions to be taken about foreign currency mortgages, early repayment and repossession if the consumer fails to keep mortgage payments up to date. (MB/transl.fl)
