Brussels, 08/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - With Hungary again causing concern for its partners due to attempts by the Orban government to amend the constitution yet again, four member states (Germany, Denmark, Finland and the Netherlands) wrote to the European Commission on Friday 8 March asking for a European mechanism to be set in place in order to ensure that fundamental values are respected, the AP agency reports. Their letter does not mention any countries in particular but comes at a time when the Hungarian parliament is to take a stance, on Monday, on further amendments to the national constitution (see EUROPE 10800). According to these four countries, the EU should be able to act rapidly and freeze the payment of European funds whenever fundamental values are brought into question. (SP/transl.jl)
