Brussels, 08/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - Seven years late, the second generation Schengen Information System (SIS II) will come on stream on 9 April 2013 under a decision taken on Thursday by the interior ministers of Schengen nations and associated countries. Delays mounted up on either side, with the European Commission being responsible for the central hub, linked in turn to all the national systems. In recent months, Finland highlighted huge problems with getting its own computers adjusted. SIS II is a large-scale computer system containing details of people and objects and used by border guards, customs officials and visa and law enforcement agencies within the Schengen area. SIS II comprises a central system (SIS II Central); a national system (N.SIS II) in each member state (national systems linked to SIS II Central) and communications infrastructure between SIS II Central and N.SIS II.
