Baltic interconnection - focus on gas market integration

Brussels, 07/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - The regional GNL terminal for Baltic countries is still a major bone of contention in the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP).

At the invitation of Commissioner for Energy Günther Oettinger, energy ministers from the Baltic region (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland and Poland) held an informal meeting in Brussels on Wednesday 6 March, to prepare the next ministerial meeting on the BEMIP. The March ministerial will include Germany, Denmark and Sweden.

Participating countries at the meeting on Wednesday discussed progress in the work towards integrating the gas markets and developing the infrastructure needed in the region. They also agreed to cooperate in an effort to promote further development of the integrated gas market and coordinate their efforts to implement the provisions in the third energy market liberalisation package on the gas sector. Ministers indicated, however, that a more far-reaching analysis of the specific projects and the implementation timetable is necessary. The choice of location for the regional GNL terminal was discussed, with Lithuania and Latvia both in the running for this location. The subject will be discussed in greater detail at the March ministerial meeting. (EH/transl.fl)
