07/03/2013 (Agence Europe) -Reduced mackerel quotas for Spain. On Tuesday 5 March, the European Commission decided on a deduction scheme for future Spanish quotas for mackerel, following a detailed investigation into suspected overfishing in 2009. The deductions, adopted under the EU's fisheries control regulation (1224/2009), related to the above-quota 65,429 tonnes of fish caught over an 11-year period, up until 2023. The Commission has indicated that it will work in close collaboration with the Spanish authorities to apply the 2012 action plan on registering catches, in an effort to prevent further cases of overfishing in the future.
