Asylum support to Greece extended

Brussels, 07/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - The European Asylum Support Office (EASO) and the Greek government have extended their cooperation until December 2014 under the terms of an agreement signed on in Brussels Thursday 7 March, according to an EASO press release.

A first assistance programme was signed in April 2011, shortly after the European Court of Human Rights had found against Greece. Since this ruling, EASO has been keen to help Greece bring its asylum system into line. The support organisation helps it to, for example, handle asylum seekers' applications and rectify significant delays. EASO explained that, for this new phase, 70 experts from different member states will be sent to Greece. One of their tasks will be to train the personnel managing the asylum centres and those managing European funds. (SP/transl.fl)
