Brussels, 07/03/2013 (Agence Europe) - On 7 March, The European Commission approved requests for registering the following products on the list of Protected Designations of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indications (PGI): from Italy, the Barbary fig “Ficodindia di San Cono” (PDO) grown in a region of Sicily; from Germany, “Spargel aus Franken/Fränkischer Spargel / Franken-Spargel” asparagus (PGI) grown in Franconia; from Finland, “Kitkan viisas” fish (PDO) caught in lakes located in the Koillismaa plateaux region. On the previous day, the Commission added another agricultural and food product name to the list of Protected Geographical Indications (PGI), the “Salame felino” pork sausage product from the Parma region, in Italy. The Commission also approved the request for registering the Italian red apple “Mela Rossa Cuneo” grown in part of the Cuneo and Turin provinces as a PGI. These decisions are expected to be published in the next few days in the Official Journal of the EU. These names will be added to the list of more than 1100 products already protected under legislation on protected geographical indications, designations of origin and traditional specialities.
