EU calls for restraint

Brussels, 14/02/2013 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 14 February, the EU called on all parties in Bahrain to “exercise restraint, avoid provocations and reject violence, especially during the demonstrations” that day, organised by the opposition to celebrate the uprising that took place two years ago to the day, the spokesman for EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton said. He underlined that the death of a 16-year old demonstrator, in Manama, was “disquieting”. “It is indispensable that all sides contribute constructively and genuinely to the on-going national reconciliation process, in order to lay the necessary foundations to rebuild trust and tackle socio-economic grievances and other outstanding issues thereby preparing the ground for sustainable reforms”, he said, reiterating Ashton's support for national dialogue, which resumed on 10 February (see EUROPE 10783).(CG/transl.jl)
