Brussels, 05/02/2013 (Agence Europe) - At least 54 countries, several of them European, could have cooperated in the CIA's kidnap, illegal detention and torture operations, according to a report published on Tuesday 5 February by an American humanitarian association. The document - presented by the Open Society Justice Initiative (OSJI), a private foundation - lists numerous human rights violations, facilitated by the covert support of some states for the CIA operations. “Secret detention and extraordinary rendition operations (…) could not have been implemented without the active participation of foreign governments. These governments too must be held accountable”, states the OSJI. The association singles out Pakistan, Afghanistan, Egypt and Jordan, where the existence of secret prisons and the use of torture have been well documented for several years. However, the list also includes Ireland, Iceland and Cyprus, which could have opened their airspace to planes transporting prisoners outside any legal framework. Poland, Lithuania and Romania could have housed secret prisons on their territory, according to the OSJI. France is not mentioned in the report - unlike many other European countries such as Germany, Spain, Portugal and Austria. (LC/transl.fl)
