ACP group opens doors to green economy and public On 11 October

Brussels, 10/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Thursday 11 October, sustainable development of the green economy will be placed at centre stage by the ACP (Africa/Caribbean/Pacific) countries which are partners of the European Union, at the open day held in Brussels by the secretariat of the group of ACP States.

The dynamic of sustainable development in the ACP countries, which are connected to the EU by the Cotonou agreement, is the subject of this event, which will be attended by more than 100 participants from embassies, regional organisations and ACP civil society. Environmental NGOs, experts from ACP countries and leaders of projects implemented under ACP-EU cooperation will be among those attending.

This open day comes under the Rio+20 sustainable development summit and will devote much time to the challenges to be met by this group of developing countries. “It is a very significant and central issue for us in developing ACP countries. We are amongst the most vulnerable to the effects of the global financial crisis, but at the same time highly dependent on our environment and natural resources to sustain lives”, said Achille Bassilekin III, undersecretary general in charge of the sustainable economic development and trade department.

Exhibition and information stands of international organisations such as the UN environment programme (UNEP), the Pacific Islands Forum and the Community of the Caribbean will also be present at the event. (AN/transl.fl)
