Brussels, 10/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - In its 2012 progress report, the European Commission calls for greater political will so that the country can make progress towards joining the EU, as well as in the reform process, because progress is now at a standstill. The report indicated that this view was shared by political representatives regarding the overall and future direction of the country and its implementation of its institutional framework towards making a qualitative step forward towards joining the EU, which remain absent. The European Commission explained that progress towards joining the EU was at a complete standstill.
Limited progress had been made in the area of political criteria and the EU considers better coordination as a priority between the different levels of power, so that they speak with a single voice. The report calls for substantial effort to be made to strengthen the judiciary and to fight against corruption and organised crime, as well as to pursue reform of public administration. Progress must also be made towards its minorities, achieving a market economy and the question of its borders with Croatia.
Commissioner Stefan Füle emphasised that it is disappointing that the commitments made in the dialogue for accession have not been honoured or the calendar respected. (CG/trans.fl)
