10/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - Ashton calls for moratorium on death penalty. Greatly concerned by reports that the execution of Iranian prisoner, Gholamreza Khosravi Savadjani, may be imminent, on Tuesday 9 October High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton appealed for clemency and for the sentence to be commuted. Highlighting that the death penalty contravenes Iran's international obligations, Ashton repeated her call to halt all pending executions and to introduce a moratorium on the death penalty. Savadjani was sentenced to death for hostility towards God, owing to his supposed links with the opposition, the People's Mojahedin Organisation of Iran. (CG/transl.fl)
