EXTERNAL ACTION / (ae) belarus

01/10/2012 (Agence Europe) - Liberation of two political prisoners. On 28 September, the Polish MEPs of the EPP, Jacek Protasiewicz and Filip Kaczmarek, welcomed the liberation on the 26th of that month of two Belarusian political prisoners, Siarhei Kavalenka and Paval Syramalotau. “We would like to consider it as a positive signal from the Belarusian authorities with respect to restoring some progress and improving the living conditions of those who struggle for democracy and human rights in Belarus”, they stressed in a joint press release. The two MEPs urged the Belarusian authorities to continue on this “positive path” and to free the 13 other political prisoners, recognised as “prisoners of conscience” by human rights organisations. “We believe that these actions could be one of crucial steps required to take in order to resolve the EU-Belarus relations gridlock”, they added.
