Yulia Tymoshenko and her daughter call EU to action

Brussels, 03/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - “It is important for European political leaders to understand and realise that the time for compromises and diplomatic negotiations with the regime is over”, Eugenia Tymoshenko, the daughter of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, told EUROPE on Monday 3 September. “Yulia Tymoshenko asks, and urges, that not only words be used, but action be taken. She wants the democratic world to realise that the elections will not be able to be fair or free. They already aren't”, she said during her visit to Brussels, alluding especially to imprisoned political opponents. “We need the European Parliament and democratic institutions to use all the means possible to show Yanukovich that they are watching him, but they can also do a lot to stop him”, Eugenia Tymoshenko said, mentioning the investigations into the corruption affairs that the entourage of the current president, Viktor Yanukovich, are conducting.

In Yulia Tymoshenko's opinion, the European Union must take action, with the Ukrainian opposition, to marginalise Yanukovich before the legislative elections scheduled for 28 October. “Action needs to happen not after the elections, but before. After the elections, it will be too late”, she said in an interview with the Polish magazine Newsweek. “Without the support of the European Community, we have very little chance of success, however. We also ask the world not to support the dictator who is pretending to believe that he is conducting reforms”, she added. (CG/transl.fl)
