Brussels, 03/09/2012 (Agence Europe) - On Monday 3 September, ahead of the 16-22 September European Mobility Week, the European Commission launched the EU's first award to encourage local and regional authorities to adopt Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs). Cities within the EU, the European Economic Area and Croatia are eligible to apply for the €10,000 award. EU Transport Commissioner Siim Kallas explained that the SUMPs can help cities provide residents with integrated, sustainable mobility options to meet their real transport needs. The competition will provide recognition and reward excellence in urban mobility. The SUMPs cover both passenger and freight transport, reducing air and sound pollution, improving safety and cost-effectiveness. Local authorities have until 9 November to submit entries on http://www.dotherightmix.eu. (MD/transl.fl)
